The tabloid press of the 17th century: broadside ballads were one-off, crudely printed flyers on which the latest socially relevant news was printed in rhyming song or ballad form in an entertaining – and perhaps not always entirely truthful – way, before being distributed among the people. The old texts bear witness beautifully to the popular culture of the day. They reached a broad section of the population and over time mutated into folk songs. The audience can look forward to these and other treasures from British and Irish archives in this concert by the Quadriga Consort.
They can also expect the ensemble’s unmistakable trademark: new arrangements for historical instruments, including a stylistic “update”, of the traditional melodies and songs, which are always preserved in monophonic form. But now they’re increasingly also creating new settings of historical texts. All this produces the stimulating juxtaposition of old and new, of traditional and contemporary music language, that Quadriga fans value so much. Upcycling at its finest.
