Internationale Barocktage Stift Melk Abbey Melk, Sommersakristei

Begun in 2019, the collaboration between the Melk Abbey International Baroque Festival and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences continues during the 2020 Festival. “baroXmedia” builds a bridge between current media experiments and the baroque, connecting the world of the digital with that of the transcendental. On the one hand, this places the imaginative realms of the present and past on an “equal” footing. On the other, the seeming contradiction between them sharpens our view of their contrasts. The high-baroque Summer Sacristy of Melk Abbey provides an ideal setting for projection. Here, students from the Media Technology and Digital Design/Experimental Media courses add their experiments in media to the virtually endless cosmos above.

Placed on the same level, a dialogue emerges with the spirits of the times, the angels of consciousness and the tides of religion. “Pixels, bits & angels” draws the light together, illuminating the impression of the baroque. “baroXmedia” represents a further attempt to inscribe this historic space with contemporary meaning and to explore an expanded conception of reality.
