Settings of the Psalms of King David from Judaism, Christianity and Islam are an example of how the Psalms can serve as a source of spirituality, as a link between tradition and modernity, but above all as a path that brings people together. Particularly interesting, for example, is the story of Wojciech Bobowski, who after converting to Islam took the name Ali Ufki and was court musician to the Turkish sultan and translated the bible into Turkish. This programme, tailor-made for the Baroque Festival, serves as a pilgrimage to renewal and encounter: renewal of the awareness that the future of intercultural encounter is in humane togetherness. Johannes Hiemetsberger has made a name for himself in the Austrian musical landscape as a dedicated choir director and conductor. With equal dedication he turns his attention now to a subject that has lost none of its salience over the centuries. And he has managed to secure the services of an ensemble whose raison d'être could not be better suited to this programme: the Ensemble Sarband sees itself as a builder of bridges between cultures, peoples and epochs.
